Easy credit is the grease on the wheels, but I think the real driver might be TV.  TV makes everything look easy--what ever anyone wants they have, and the viewer is never clued in on how they pay for it.
That seems to be creating a neverland attitude, weakening good sense that might prevent people from living beyond their means.
