I dont' know how much they make but it must be OK for that many people to voluntarily climb up and down the stadium like that. Some vendors offer free goods for volunteers. I've been a camp counselor and a lifeguard. Both were great jobs, paid relatively well, and I got to travel for the camp job to Disney, Universal Studios, and other cool places. :) Also along the same lines as being a referee/umpire is being a coach.
