Never heard of Netflix canceling an account for low activity. I once had two movies for 8 months while I was working on a Death March Project. Not sure what the difference was between you and I - my money seems to be no more valuable than yours. Very odd.

How about the amount of money Verizon makes on people that don't switch their texting plans to accommodate their actual usage? Without a plan the per text rate is .20, while under the Verizon plan it is .02 per text - or less ($5 for 250, $10 for 500, $20 for unlimited).

Sending just 25 text messages a month without a plan is the same price as being able to send 250 under the cheapest plan!

For your book addictions, I recommend paperbackswap.com. It's a great service, and it keeps costs down.

I do a decent job of avoiding these by writing due dates on the calendar IMMEDIATELY. Not a half hour after I get home, but within a minute. Simple in theory, can be difficult in practice.

I always won with the BMG music club. I always canceled after buying whatever was required.

Funny that NetFlix canceled you. Why not just keep milking you for the unused service?

A friend of mine misplaced a video once and didn't realize it. When she found it and returned it, they wanted to charge her something like $80. She pointed out that it might make more sense for them to charge the actual cost of the video and retain her as a customer, but they pushed for the $80 and she took her rental business elsewhere, after years at this place.

At least with library fines, the money is going to a good place. Consider it a non-deductible contribution :)
